Webflow changed what was possible for web designers. Its visual interface let experienced designers build production-ready sites without writing code, and gave newcomers a way in that did not require learning a full development stack. That democratization was genuinely significant.
But with scale comes a familiar risk.
The WordPress parallel
WordPress started as a blogging tool and became the engine behind a third of the internet. That growth brought an enormous ecosystem - themes, plugins, page builders - that made it easier to launch something quickly. It also made it easy to launch something that looked like everything else.
Webflow is following a similar arc. The template marketplace is growing. The drag-and-drop presets are expanding. The entry point is getting lower, which means the average output is gravitating toward a mean.
Originality vs. template dependency
Templates are not the problem. The problem is treating them as finished products rather than starting points.
A template tells you what is structurally possible. It does not tell you what is right for your brand, your audience, or your positioning. When designers stop at the template and call it done, the result is a site that communicates "we picked the same thing everyone else picked." That is a brand signal, just not a good one.
Bespoke design - where the structure, typography, motion, and visual language are built around a specific brand - is still the strongest differentiator a website can have. It signals investment. It signals attention. It signals that the company takes its digital presence seriously.
Striking the right balance
The answer is not to reject templates entirely. It is to know when you are using them as scaffolding versus when you are letting them make decisions for you.
Use templates to establish structure and save time on solved problems. Rebuild anything that touches brand identity, tone, or the core user experience from scratch. That is where the actual differentiation lives - and that is where a designer's judgment matters most.
Webflow's power comes from giving designers control. The designers who use that control well will keep producing work that stands out. The ones who defer to the marketplace will produce work that blends in.
The platform did not change that equation. It just made the stakes more visible.
